Who’s “at risk”

Often when students do not fit into the traditional “American model” of behavior, they are labeled “at risk,” especially students of color, the physically challenged, and the economically disadvantaged. But how do we recognize who is “at risk” without holding stereotypic notions about what to expect or assume of students “at risk”? And more importantly, how can we better serve students who are “at risk” so they will have a genuine opportunity to learn and reach their full potential?

Our program explores an emerging vision of the future role of technology in visual arts education and alternative educational contexts, namely Cyber School and art education. The framework that we use for analysis addresses three “big questions” related to technology in art education:

1. Does it make learning more accessible to students “at risk”?

2. Does it improve teaching and learning?

3. Does it have the potential to reconnect disengaged youth?

Our analysis of technology’s present contributions to visual arts teaching and learning suggests that alternative and technological innovations in education may play a role in improving and alleviating the “at-risk” conditions of diverse student populations.

Cyber School

Our cyber school program supports classroom-based efforts with a strong academic focus, designed to meet the needs of students who are most at risk of academic and/or social failure due to long-term suspension from school or who are caught up in the juvenile justice system. We work hard to insure that our students learn up to their daily potential.

Youth and Music

Our program session includes a multi-faceted array of lessons that foster a sense of self esteem and confidence. Without the need for prior musical experience, children are invited to interact in a non-pressured multi-step protocol. Based in part upon the idea that music builds confidence as well as exercise, this program includes key strategies for breaking down barriers and promoting meaningful communication among our youth.

Creative Arts

Our Creative Arts program allows students to study in graphic design, photography, videography and writing. Our Recording Arts focus on artists, engineering and production; and an entrepreneurial program which teaches students about setting and reaching goals. These programs help incredibly gifted and talented young people who have been labeled “at-risk” for a whole host of different reasons to become successful in a field they are passionate about, while contributing back to society in a positive and progressive manner.
